How Pinterest Influenced Halloween

The past few Halloweens, I have let the holiday pass without participating in the traditional activities; pumpkin carving, making a visit to the apple orchard and eating themed food. However this year, my friends and I got pretty into the festivities.

Pinterest
The difference between this year and last is that this year, is that I was constantly reminded that Halloween was coming by the hundreds of Pinterest posts of pumpkin carvings, DIY costumes and other creative decorations. The amazing and relatively simple-to-make designs were extremly motivating and made me want to really participate in the Halloween decorating festivities this year. Thus, my friends and I decided we needed to get together for a night of Pinterest-inspired pumpkin carving.

We have all gotten very into Pinterest recently and each came to the pumpkin carving night with ideas from pumpkins we had seen on Pinterest and talked about how we could add our own personal twists to the design.

The following images were our inspiration:

Here is what we came up with:

The best thing about using designs we found on Pinterest and adding our own personal twists to it is that they were far more creative and unique than the average Halloween pumpkin with a funny face or with a Halloween-inspired word carved into it, like "Boo!" With Pinterest's growing popularity, I think we will see a lot more people using the site to inspire DIY holiday decorating.

1960's Revival of Fashion Photography - Floating through Mid-Air

Melvin Sokolsky is American photographer, who had no formal training and is recognized for his role in the revival of fashion photography in the 1960s. The Bubble series he shot for Harper’s Bazaar portraying fashion models inside giant floating bubbles in Paris, 1963 is one of his most famous projects.

I find these photographs, which rank among the classics in photography to be fascinating and in a way, extremely  calming. It is especially amazing that the photographer was able to create these images, considering the time period and he clearly didn't have photoshop readily available the way photographers do today to merge two photographs together.
Since the famous Bubble series, Sokolsky has also done a lot of work for various ad campaigns.

Guitarist for the Day

Google's homepage feature today honors electric guitar inventor Les Paul's birthday.

While I am probably the least musically-inclined person I know, I think Google helps me look like a pretty awesome guitarist for the day! Listen.

Remember When Sony Let 250,000 Bouncy Balls Loose in San Francisco

The Sony commercial showing 250,000 bouncy balls loose on the streets of San Francisco is one of my favorite commercials and I love these photos by Peter Funch capturing the moment.

I learned from Alice at theMet, that a team of 50 interns were there to gather all of the balls around San Francisco after each of the six takes in four days it took to film the commercial. See the whole commercial below.

Arctic Time Lapse Video Shows Incredible Colors

This amazing time lapse video done by TSO Photography shows the amazing natural colors of the Arctic from April 29 to May 10, 2011 on the archipelago Lofoten in Norway. The Norwegian photographer has decided to call this natural phenomenon "The Arctic Light," which occurs 2 to 4 weeks before you can see the Midnight Sun.

My Royal Friday Highlights

Like many other Americans, I have been completely immersed in the #rw2011 since waking up at 4 a.m. this morning. Here are my personal favorite #rw2011 moments.

1. Kate's "Oh, wow!" as she walks out onto the balcony (9 seconds in)

2. William helping Kate get her train out of the carriage after arriving at Buckingham Palace and holding the bouquet for her. This photo is honestly priceless!

3. The kiss from the balcony of Buckingham Palace...and the second one.

4. The forensic lipreader, Ruth Press, who noticed William telling Kate, "You look beautiful" when she met him at the altar.

5. How could I leave out her amazing wedding dress designed by Sarah Burton. Never thought I would find a long-sleeved wedding dress appealing, she proved me very wrong today.

6. And her second dress, equally as elegant as the first.

7. When the people climbed in the fountain of the Victoria Memorial after William and Kate's kiss on the balcony. I would probably be doing that if I were there, too.

8. Finally, getting to eat and share the cookies I baked for my office in celebration of #rw2011

Kate Middleton - Anything but Common

In the past few weeks have found myself very much on the bandwagon when it comes to the Royal Wedding frenzy. So much so that tonight I will be getting around four hours of sleep so I can be one of the millions around the world to watch the wedding take place live.

Part of the reason I love the couple so much is because of how modern they both are and the fact that Kate is a true commoner- it is a perfect fairy tale come true! However, I couldn't help myself from laughing out loud to these images and the commentary that goes along with them. I hope you will enjoy them too.

NASA Releases Incredible Photos of Earth from Space

In honor of Earth Day last Friday, NASA released some incredible photos of our planet from space. The photos include some aesthetically pleasing images from space, while others will probably touch a nerve with some of us; depicting natural disasters and devistating events from around the world. See some of the images below. You can also see more images at CBS.com or NASA.gov.

Robot_arm_540x405

I think that this photo is a beautiful depiction of both nature and technology. It shows the robotic arm from Space Shuttle Endeavour is seen with the Earth's horizon and the sun in the background. It was taken aboard Endeavour's STS-77 mission in 1996.

9-11_540x405

This incredible, yet horrifying image was taken from the International Space Station as it hovered Manhattan on September 11, 2001. I was a little shocked at just how visible the smoke from the World Trade Center towers was from space.

Katrina_540x405

Another amazing, yet emotional photo taken of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, just before it slammed into the Gulf Coast.

Solar_eclipse_540x405

This image was taken from NASA's Terra satellite beautifully showing the effects of a total solar eclipse over the Arctic on August 1, 2008.

Cumulonimbus_over_africa_540x4

NASA captures a giant cumulonimbus cloud soaring above Africa.

Bahamas_540x368

This image taken from the International Space Station in 2002 shows Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas. The amazing blue from the island shown in this picture really makes me want a weekend vacation in the Bahamas!

Eruption_540x368

The is a photo taken by astronaut Jeff Williams from the International Space Station of the Cleveland Volcano in Alaska while erupting on May 23, 2006.

Everest_540x405

Photo from the International Space Station in 2004 of Mount Everest. Something interesting about this photo is that the peak is nearly as high as most airplanes fly, which is why it appears to be on the horizon.

Greenland_canyons_540x405

This is a photo from NASA's Operation IceBridge on March 29, 2011, as it flew near the canyons and glaciers of northwest Greenland.

Hurricane_earl_540x405

This photo taken on August 30, 2010 of Hurricane Earl northeast of Puerto Rico from the International Space Station.

Nile_river_delta_540x405

This is a photo of the Nile River in Egypt at night, taken from the International Space Station. It is a great depiction of Egypt's population, which is concentrated almost entirely in the Nile River Delta.

Hurricane_ike_540x405

This is a photograph of Hurricane Ike, taken from the International Space Station.

Ozone_hole_540x405

The Antartic ozone hole at its yearly maximum on September 12, 2008. According to NASA, the hole spanned more than 10.5 million square miles. If this doesn't make you want to stop the pollution of our planet, I don't know what will.

Ring_540x405

This is a photo of Italy from space, with the Nardo Ring clearly visible. The Nardo Ring is a huge race car test track in Italy that, according to NASA, is "steeply banked to reduce the amount of active steering needed by drivers."

Sarychev_volcano_540x405

This image is of the Sarychev volcano erupting on Russia's Kuril Islands on June 12, 2009. The International Space Station happened to be flying over it.

Child at Heart

I have always known that I am a geek at heart. Anyone who gets to know me thinks I am a total nerd. My favorite movies of all times are the Star Wars trilogies (yes, both of them) and my favorite books are Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia and Twilight. Yes, I secretly believe that these fantasy fiction stories are true stories of a world hidden from muggles, but I didn't put two and two together until I saw these pictures and I realized: I am truly child at heart.

Most people would look at these pictures and think, 'That's cool, I would have loved that as a child.' Or they say, 'I'll buy that for my kids one day.' I, however, would want to own any of these things for my 23-year-old self!

Joni Niemelä Nature Photography

Joni Niemelä claims to be an amateur photographer. He could have fooled me with these amazing photos of nature taken in his home of Finland. These macro photography pictures were all taken in  RAW-mode and then edited in a lightroom. I have to say, even though I am very sick of Minnesota's winter, the way he captures the winter season so beautifuly, it makes me wish I was wherever these were taken.
